[Item 1]
Free Spool Button-Release (Positive Free Spool)
DISENGAGING THE GEAR TRAIN: The free spool mechanism disengages the reel gear train, allowing the spool to turn freely for casting, or for letting out line. To put the reel in free spool, use your thumb to depress the comfortably-located button release on the flange of the right sideplate. The button will lock in place automatically. A friction-reducing, nylon yoke insures positive locking without hang-ups every time the button release is pushed.
ENGAGING THE GEAR TRAIN: Turning the handle of the reel in a clockwise or forward direction will engage the gear train. A positive, two-step action takes place internally during the first revolution of the handle and the button release automatically returns to its extended position, signaling the reel is back in gear.
[Item 2]
Double-knobbed Handle (Two Function Handle)
OFFSET KNOBS: The double-knobbed handle on the 5HS and 6HS Millionaire Reels is offset on the reel shaft to provide two ways to crank the reel. The knob on the shorter leg of the handle makes high speed cranking easier (because the knob's turning radius is small), while the knob on the longer leg provides greater mechanical leverage for power when horsing a fish is necessary. There is never a chance of the handle nut backing off accidentally, because a special plate locks it in place.
[Item 3]
Five-Armed Star Wheel (Drag Operation)
SENSITIVE ADJUSTMENT: Drag pressure can be increased by rotating the five-armed star wheel (located behind the reel handle) in a clockwise or forward direction. Approximately three complete revolutions of the star wheel will move the drag from full "off" to full "on", offering an extremely sensitive range of adjustments to match any line size or fishing situation. The newly developed, multistage drag system creates constant and consistent drag tension at any setting.
RELEASING DRAG PRESSURE: At the end of every fishing day, the star wheel should be turned counter-clockwise to relieve the drag tension on the spool. This allows the drag tension on the spool. This allows the drag washers to recover from the compression applied while the drag was tightened. Because of the use of oiled leather drag washers, releasing the drag pressure is an important step in retaining the smoothness that was built into the drag.
[Item 4]
Three Knurled Screws (Quick Take-Down Sideplate)
CHANGING SPOOLS: Three knurled screws secure the entire right sideplate assembly to the reel frame pillars, making it a quick and simple matter to remove the spool. These screws can be loosened by hand but cannot be removed - there is no way to lose them. Once the right sideplate assembly [Item 5] is lifted off, the spool can be pulled out and changed. Remember that the centrifugal collars sit loosely on spindle arms attached to the spool shaft and care should be taken to prevent them from dropping off when the spool is removed. One way to do this is to hold the reel upright when lifting off the right sideplate assembly.
REPLACING RIGHT SIDEPLATE: Three threaded pillars and one centering pin extend beyond the right frame of the reel. Because of the positioning of the holes in the sideplate assembly, these four extensions will only fit the sideplate one way. With the spool fully seated in the left sideplate [Item 6] guide the tip of the spool shaft into the center of the pinion gear in the right sideplate. Holding the right sideplate just above the pillars, rotate it until the three threaded pins line up with the three quick-take-down screws. The quickest method is to use the button release as a guide. Position it approximately and then move the sideplate forward or back a fraction of a turn until alignment is achieved.
[Item 7]
Line Guide (Levelwind Assembly)
ELIMINATES LINE BUILD-UP: As the spool turns, the line guide travels from side to side, laying the line evenly on the spool during the retrieve and guiding it during the cast. The worm gear on which the line guide rides is carefully machined to operate smoothly. When you are finished fishing for the day, don't reel the tag end of the line through the guide. Instead, put a loop in the end and slip it around the reel foot or simply allow a short length to extend beyond the guide. This insures that the line guide and the line will always be opposite each other. Otherwise, the line enters the guide at an extreme angle increasing friction and making the reel lose smoothness on the cast and in the drag.
[Item 8]
Cast Control Knob (Casting Control System)
ERRORLESS CASTING: The cast control knob in the center of the left sideplate combines with the centrifugal collars on the spindle arms of the spool shaft (on right side) to help eliminate backlashes. By tightening the cast control knob in a clockwise direction, light pressure is applied against the spool shaft. The amount of pressure determines how fast the spool will revolve during the first and last parts of the cast. As the spool starts to spin, centrifugal force slides the collars to the ends of the spindle arms and they rub against a polished flange on the inside of the set plate. When the spool begins to slow, the pressure on the spool shaft again becomes the main factor in effective casting control.
SETTING REMINDER: The knurled and numbered ring [Item 9] around the cast control knob rotates and can be lined up with the red benchmark on the cast control knob (at any number) as a reference point for drag adjustment.
